What is creatine?

What does the research show in dogs?

1. Creatine improved performance in agility dogs
One study (The effect of creatine monohydrate supplementation on blood lactate and performance in agility dogs) evaluated creatine supplementation in agility dogs performing repeated exercise. Dogs receiving creatine demonstrated improved performance during repeated runs, suggesting their muscles were able to regenerate energy more effectively between bouts of exercise.
For working dogs and canine athletes, this finding is particularly exciting because it supports creatine’s role in improving recovery during repeated high-intensity activity.
2. Dogs absorb creatine well
Another study (Addition of a combination of creatine, carnitine, and choline to a commercial diet increases postprandial plasma creatine and creatinine concentrations in adult dogs.) demonstrated that orally administered creatine is readily absorbed by dogs.
This may sound simple, but it answers an important question. A supplement only works if it can actually be absorbed and utilized by the body. The study confirmed that creatine reaches the bloodstream, allowing muscle tissue to use it as intended.
3. Creatine appears to be well tolerated
The available canine studies have shown good tolerance to creatine supplementation. While we would certainly welcome additional long-term canine research, creatine also has one of the strongest safety records of any sports supplement in human medicine after decades of scientific investigation.
Which dogs may benefit?
Creatine is not necessary for every dog.

- Dogs rebuilding muscle after illness or surgery
